Managing Heavy Equipment

About Me

Managing Heavy Equipment

Keeping up with a fleet of heavy equipment can be a daunting task. However, I've found that there are a few things that I can do to make it easier on myself. For example, I invested in heavy equipment management software that is helping me keep up with the maintenance and equipment schedule for all of my equipment and machines. When I started using the software, I realized that some of my equipment wasn't getting enough maintenance, and others were getting too much. The software has really streamlined my system and helped me save money. I'm writing this blog to help others learn how to manage their own heavy equipment more effectively. Using software and other equipment management tools and strategies can help you save money too.

3 Indispensable Skid Steer Attachments For Use On Your Cattle Station

Owning and operating a cattle station isn't exactly an easy way to make a living, and any kind of labor-saving device can make the business of caring for your cattle significantly easier. It's no surprise that skid steers are a common sight on cattle stations across America, and these versatile, robust vehicles can be turned to an enormous variety of tasks.

However, a skid steer's usefulness depends entirely on the attachments you use with it, and choosing the right attachment for the task at hand is particularly important in the cattle industry. If you're looking for skid steer attachments that can help save your cattle station time, effort, and money, keep an eye out for the following useful attachment types:

Calf corral attachments

Any newborn calf born on your station needs to be examined immediately for signs of disease, birth defects, and other problems which can affect its health, and in most cases, you'll probably want to tag your new animal as soon as possible. When a 500lb mother cow is lingering around the birth site with a brain full of protective maternal instincts, this can be a challenging task at the best of times.

Calf corral attachments are enormously useful for allowing you to safely examine a new addition to your herd. Essentially consisting of a strong cage with an open top and bottom, a calf corral attachment is lowered over the new calf, allowing you to safely and speedily separate the calf from its mother without putting yourself in danger while keeping the calf in full view of the mother.

Bale mover attachments

A hay bale can be enormously heavy and difficult to move for something made entirely out of dry grass, and bale moving attachments for skid steers will make transporting hay bales to storage barns and feeding areas much easier.

The simplest bale-moving attachments are bale spears; as the name would suggest, these attachments pierce a bale of hay, allowing it to be lifted and moved easily by your skid steer. Spears are generally most useful if your bales are relatively small and light.

Bale huggers are more expensive but are an essential investment if you use heavier bales which would come apart under their own weight if pierced and lifted with spear attachments. These attachments use hydraulically-powered grabbing arms to "hug" a hay bale and are particularly useful for transporting wrapped hay bales to storage areas without damaging their protective sheeting.

Post driver attachments

Robust, properly installed fencing is a must on any cattle station, but driving in all those fence posts to a suitable depth is time-consuming, back-breaking labor, especially if you operate a large station or graze your cattle on dry, flinty soil. Post driver attachments for your skid steer will make erecting new cattle fences and repairing damaged ones significantly faster and easier.

These attachments are essentially miniaturized pile drivers — simply load the fence post into the driver, and a powerful hydraulic press with drive it into the earth quickly and effectively, without requiring you to dig holes for your fence posts in advance. They can be used with both timber and metal fence posts, and some high-end models can be loaded with multiple posts at once, letting you erect a secure fence around acres of land in a matter of hours.
